Effective strategies for RETELL LECTURE

First of all observe the picture/image given in the question. You can anticipate something about the topic on which the lecture would be.

Keep your erasable notebook and marker ready to make notes.

Once you start listening to the lecture, make the notes of the key points and the supporting ideas.

Never try to write down everything in the lecture. Pick up only the key words and use your own symbols, abbreviations and arrows to jot down the important points. Make a flow of the ideas so that you can speak fluently.

Example: –  The following is the transcript of a lecture. I shall tell you how to pick up the key points…

TRANSCRIPT 1

In today’s lecture I’m going to talk about changes in air pollution since the middle of the last century and what has created these changes. So, um – by the I 950s, air pollution was very visible with frequent thick black fogs known as ‘smogs’ in many large cities around the world. The main source of this pollution was from factories and it caused severe health problems. For example, a particularly severe smog in London in 1952 caused over four thousand deaths.

Obviously something had to be done and in 1956 a Clean Air Act was introduced in Britain. This addressed the pollution from factories and the smogs soon disappeared, However, as you know, these days air pollution is still a big issue. The main difference between now and the 1950’s is that you can’t see it – it’s invisible. Also, the main source of pollution now is from cars and lorries,

and although these don’t produce visible signs, this air pollution is still a significant risk to health. And one of the key factors in the rise of this type of pollution is that we have all become much more vehicle-dependent, There are far more cars and lorries, trains and planes than in the 1950’s and this is now the main source of air pollution around the world.

Now that you have made the notes of the key points, it would be very easy to form the story for your speaking. You will have 10 seconds to recollect your ideas.

Finally when the recording bar appears start speaking with a confident tone. Make sure you speak FLUENTLY & with CORRECT PRONUNCIATON of the words. You will have 40 seconds to complete this task.

Improve your general listening skills

To get 9 bands in the listening test, practicing listening tests is not enough, for this, you have to put some extra effort by listening to the general listening materials (radio reports, TV-shows, documental programs etc) and you can find various stuff from internet that can help your listening strong.


Increase your vocabulary bank

if you are not familiar with any word then there are chances you will miss the word especially in the last section of listening where listening runs very fast. Section 3 is almost always about education. For example, students and a tutor talking about an assignment. Learn all the vocabulary you can about studying at university. This way you will understand this section better.


Practice Weak Section
Generally, students lack in maps, multiple questions, and last section. By practicing your weaker sections more and more, will make your understanding clear.


Multitasking :
Students have to be multitasking in their tests because they must have to read questions, listen for the answers and write down the answers.

Don't leave any blank answers!
Never leave the answers, there is no negative marking. if you are not sure about the answer, guess. Never leave the answer box blank.


Read Instructions :
Always read the instructions before starting, to make sure about how many words you have to write 2 or 3.


Don't lose attention
Remember, you will only hear the audio once. So if you didn't hear some words and passed over some questions, don't worry! focus on the actual part. Review those questions at the end of the section, otherwise, you will only miss more questions and this will disturb your concentration and flow. You will need to read, write and listen to all at the same time.

Focus on words-indicators
Listen for words-indicators, such as however, but, then, finally. They help you to anticipate what the speaker will say

After each section, you have 30 seconds to check your answers. It is important to check spelling, plurals and word forms. Remember that only correctly written answers will gain points.


Transfer answers accurately

At the end of the listening test, you will have 10 minutes for transferring your answers into the answer sheet. And quite often students get confused in the numeration! As you write down your answers, check that they fit into the correct numbered space. In other words, make sure that the answer for question 7 goes into space number 7.
